Social Responsibility : Beware of Snatch Thieves

Tips to Ensure You Don't Become a Victim of
Snatch Theft and Pickpocketing

1. Be Alert of Your Surroundings
Always walk against traffic, on the inside of a sidewalk with your belongings kept away from the street side of the curb. Keep a close eye on any moving vehicles, particularly motorcycles with pillion riders. Be cautious at busy intersections and when crossing street
2. Be Aware of How You Carry Your Belongings
Be cognisant of how you carry a handbag, backpack, or parcel. Holding it in your hand beside you, or casually slung over your shoulder or behind you, makes you an easier target. Handbags should be held close to your body in front of you, and backpacks should be slung over both shoulders on your back. Be sure to fasten any closures of the bag.
3. Walk in a Group
If possible, walk with a group of people and avoid poorly lit streets, shortcuts, and narrow alleys.
4. Do not be preoccupied with your gadgets while walking.
5. Listen out for any vehicles behind you as criminals often attack from behind.
6. In Elevator
Stand by the door and against the wall so you can observe your surroundings better.

7. Keep a Low Profile
Avoid public display of wealth. Do not carry large sums of cash, carry expensive itemsor wear flashy jewellery. Leave importantidentification documents (e.g. identity card, passport, driver’s license, payment cards, etc.) at home. Photocopof your passport ID page is normally sufficient if asked for identification by local police.
8. Keep Your Valuables Safe in the Car
Do not place your handbag or purse on the passenger’s seat while driving. It is best to keep your valuables out of sight.
9. Keep an Eye on Your Valuables at Restaurants
Do not put your wallet, handbag or mobile phone on the table when you are at a restaurant.
10. Keep an Eye on Your Belongings
Do not leave your belongings unattended wherever you are, even for a moment.
11. Don’t Be an Easy Target
Opportunistic criminals will usually search for easy targets. Maintain situational awareness and try to make yourself a difficult target.
If you are the victim of a snatch theft, you should release your valuables immediately, as snatch thieves have at times resorted to violence if resisted or confronted. Try to get the vehicle plate number and an accurate description of the thief. Please notify the police immediately.
